Aims / 课程目标 This Programme aims to provide, at the postgraduate level and with the needs of main target groups in mind, focused and vigorous training in Translation and Bilingual Communication. Specifically, the Programme hopes to achieve the following objectives: To cater to the needs of students with different talents and abilities; To offer more vigorous and concentrated training and enabling future trainees to acquire more insightful and professional skills in translation and interpreting; To provide intellectual stimulation to mid-career translators and those whose work require bilingual/trilingual competence by encouraging them to reflect on their profession, develop conceptual, analytical, and linguistic skills that can further inform their work, and refine their organisational and presentational skills; To help takers of the Programme exercise their critical mind and appreciate better the relation between theory and practice, so that they can be more aware of and more articulate about the intricacies of bilingual communication and how they negotiate the challenges of translation; To provide a formal focus on new technology-based approaches to translation including translation memory, machine translation, localization and audiovisual translation; To make the programme available to applicants who have no knowledge of Chinese. Admission Requirements / 入学要求 Applicants should hold a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university, or an equivalent professional qualification. Language Proficiency Requirement / 英语要求 Applicants for the Interpreting or Practical Stream should be able to communicate in English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in English such as possessing one or more of the following qualifications: Grade D or above in AS/AL Use of English; or Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE); or a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based)*; or an overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS*; or CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in mainland China: 500 or above*; and be able to communicate in Chinese (Putonghua or Cantonese) at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in Chinese such as possessing one or more of the following qualifications: Grade D or above in AS Chinese Language and Culture (HKALE); or Level 4 or above in Chinese Language (HKDSE); or a BA degree with Chinese as the medium of instruction. Applicants for the Technology Stream should be able to communicate in English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in English such as possessing one or more of the following qualifications: Grade D or above in AS/AL Use of English; or Level 4 or above in English Language (HKDSE); or a minimum TOEFL score of 79 (internet-based)*; or an overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS*; or CET-6 (College English Test Band 6) in mainland China: 500 or above*; and be able to communicate in a language besides English at an advanced level, and provide evidence of competence in that language such as a BA degree with the language either as a major component or as the medium of instruction, or equivalent qualification. If the non-English language is Chinese then the qualifications required will be the same as that of Interpreting or Practical Stream. *Note: Test result provided should be within two years from the date of issuance of the Admission Offer letter. TOEFL iBT Home Edition or IELTS Indicator test is not accepted. Others The following documents must be submitted for assessment upon application: a copy of the original academic transcript of the first degree received by the applicant; two letters from referees of good standing in the community who are familiar with the applicant’s academic performance and/or professional work; and two 300-word self-statements, one in English and one in Chinese, outlining the applicant’s academic interests and objectives. (Applicants for the Technology Stream is not required to provide the self-statement in Chinese.) Curriculum / 课程设置
